Company registration does not automatically open an account
Registering a Japanese company and obtaining a corporate bank account are two separate steps. Each bank evaluates the applicant and may refuse an account after screening. JETRO explicitly warns that the institution may not disclose its detailed reasons.
Documents commonly requested
- Certificate of registered corporate matters.
- Corporate seal registration certificate.
- Identification of the person applying or transacting for the company.
- Banking seal where required.
These are JETRO’s general examples, not a universal bank checklist. A financial institution may ask for different documents, especially for foreign ownership or a newly formed business.
Expect questions about the actual business
JETRO notes that account opening may involve verifying the company’s business profile, financial condition, beneficial owners, reasons for opening the account and activities requiring a permit. Supporting items might include contracts, a company website, brochures, proof of office arrangements and explanations of counterparties.
Prepare concise, truthful answers to these questions. A legal registered address alone does not necessarily establish the operational substance a bank wants to verify.
Practical preparation before meeting a bank
- Confirm which banks accept applications for your company profile and representative arrangements.
- Collect registration, ownership and identification documents.
- Prepare a one-page company overview and evidence of commercial activity.
- Clarify expected domestic and international transaction flows.
- Prepare relevant documents in Japanese where the bank requires them.
- Plan for further questions and possible rejection; do not make business launches depend on guaranteed approval.
How KIZUNA can support the process
Under an agreed engagement, KIZUNA can help organise an information checklist, coordinate appointments, handle ordinary bilingual communications and arrange interpretation. We cannot bypass a bank’s screening or guarantee an account opening. Any bank-facing statements should accurately reflect the client’s own business.
Questions worth asking in advance
- Does this institution open accounts for newly established or overseas-owned corporations?
- Must the applying representative appear in person?
- Which documents need to be originals or Japanese-language versions?
- Is there a separate check for international payments?
- What happens if extra documents are requested?
